Career Summary

Biography

Jayden Macklin-Cordes is a lecturer in linguistics at the University of Newcastle, investigating language evolution through space and time. Jayden's work primarily takes a quantitative, comparative approach, analysing phonological and grammatical structures across a broad sample of the world's languages. These analyses are performed with the goal of generating new insights into language histories and human migrations, language structure and cognition, and associations between language, culture and physical landscapes.

Research Projects

OzSpace 2022 - 2023

OzSpace (Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant DP200101079 to Dr Bill Palmer) aims to investigate how landscape interacts with culture and social diversity to build representations of physical space in the minds and grammars of speakers of Australian Indigenous languages. My role on the project is, firstly, to develop a comparative database of sociotopographic features and linguistic spatial systems in Australian languages and, secondly, to test for associations between these variables using phylogenetic comparative methods.

EVOLANG 2021 - 2023

Project EVOGRAM: The role of linguistic and non-linguistic factors in the evolution of nominal classification systems (ANR Junior Researcher Grant 20-CE27-0021 to Dr Marc Allassonnière-Tang). Continuing collaboration from postdoctoral research work in 2021. Anticipated researcher exchange in mid-2023.
