Faculty of Health

1.      Admission to Candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature to the Bachelor of Medicine shall satisfy the admission criteria from the Faculty of Health Admission and Selection Policy.

2.      Enrolment

In any year a candidate will enrol in 80 units unless the Pro Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Program Convenor grants permission to do otherwise.

3.      Qualification for Admission to the Degree

To qualify for admission to the Degree a candidate shall pass the program of study approved by the Academic Senate totalling 400 units.

4.      Grading of Degree

4.1.     The Bachelor of Medicine shall be conferred as an Ordinary Degree except where a candidate's performance has reached a standard determined by the Pro Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Program Convenor, the Degree may be conferred with Distinction.

5.      Credit

With the exception of formal credit arrangements no credit will be given in the Bachelor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program.

6.      Absence

6.1.     Upon a candidate's successful completion of an academic year the Pro Vice-Chancellor may grant leave of absence from the program.

6.2.     Such leave shall only be granted to any one candidate once and will not normally be granted for a period of more than one year.

7.      Resumption of Studies

7.1.     A candidate shall be permitted to re-enrol in the year immediately following a period of approved leave of absence.

7.2.     A candidate who enrols in the Bachelor of Medical Science program shall not be deemed to be absent from the Bachelor of Medicine program and shall be permitted to re-enrol in the Bachelor of Medicine program in the year immediately following.

7.3.     A candidate who is absent for one academic year (or more) from the Bachelor of Medicine program without approved leave and who subsequently wishes to resume studies in the program will be required to re-apply to the Pro Vice-Chancellor for admission to the candidature. Requests will only be considered if there are positions available and, therefore, re-entry is not guaranteed.

7.4.     If a candidate withdraws from Year 1 in the Bachelor of Medicine program before 31 March, the candidate will be required to re-apply for admission to Year 1 according to the Faculty of Health Admission and Selection Policy

8.      Time Requirements

Except with the permission of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, a candidate shall complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Medicine within eight years of study, excluding University of Newcastle enrolment in the Bachelor of Medical Science.

9.      Exit Award

Candidates for the Bachelor of Medicine who have satisfied the requirements for the exit degree Bachelor of Health may be permitted to transfer candidature to the Bachelor of Health. Candidates wishing to transfer shall apply in writing to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Health, for approval.
