Career Summary

Biography

Robert Wyse is a PhD Candidate Sessional Academic in History at the University of Newcastle. His research examines the interactions between Commonwealth intelligence services and Korean War ex-POWs during the Cold War. The experiences this conflict's POWs after their release from Chinese prison camps in North Korea in 1953, remain understudied in existing historiography. Robert's research requires extensive knowledge not only of Australian military history, but also of the histories of the other armies of the British Commonwealth, understanding of the societies from which they were raised, and insight into how each Commonwealth nation dealt with its ex-POWs after their release from captivity.

Robert Wyse commenced his PhD Candidature in 2020 following the completion in 2019 of his Bachelor of Arts (Honours Class I) degree at the University of Newcastle. He is the recipient of a University of Newcastle Faculty Medal in History for his undergraduate work and his 2019 Honours thesis won the prestigious C.E.W. Bean Prize from the Australian Army History Unit. Since beginning his PhD project, Robert has been awarded an Australian Army History Unit research grant to assist the completion of his thesis, which indicates the viability and necessity of his original research. He is also a member of the Australian Historical Association.
