Biography

Philipp Braun received the Diploma degree in mathematics from the Technical University Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 2012 and the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, in 2016. During his studies he additionally spent one year at the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands.

During his time as a Ph.D. student he was employed by the University of Bayreuth in the Chair of Applied Mathematics as a Scientific Assistant, where he was promoted to an Assitant Professor after his graduation. Since 2016 he has been on leave from his position in Bayreuth and he has been employed by the University of Newcastle as Senior Research Associate. At the University of Newcastle he is focusing on Lyapunov methods for nonlinear dynamical systems together with Prof. Kellett.

Philipp Braun's research interest are in the analysis of controlller design for dynamical systems. He is particularly interested in predictive contol algorithms and distributed optimisation with applications in smart grids. Additionally he is interested in Lyapunov and control Lyapunov methods for stability analysis and controller design for dynamical systems.

Philipp Braun is a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE),  a Member of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM), and a Member of the Priority Research Centre for Computer-Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications (CARMA) at the University of Newcastle.

© 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Lyapunov¿s second method is one of the most successful tools for analyzing stability properties of dynamical systems. If a control Lyapunov function is known, then asymptotic stabilizability of an equilibrium of the corresponding dynamical system can be concluded without the knowledge of an explicit solution of the dynamical system. Whereas necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of nonsmooth control Lyapunov functions are known by now, constructive methods to generate control Lyapunov functions for given dynamical systems are not known up to the same extent. In this paper we build on previous work to compute (control) Lyapunov functions based on linear programming and mixed integer linear programming. In particular, we propose a mixed integer linear program based on a discretization of the state space where a continuous piecewise affine control Lyapunov function can be recovered from the solution of the optimization problem. Different to previous work, we incorporate a semiconcavity condition into the formulation of the optimization problem. Results of the proposed scheme are illustrated on the example of Artstein¿s circles and on a two-dimensional system with two inputs. The underlying optimization problems are solved in Gurobi (2016, http://www.gurobi.com).

IEEE In this work, we propose a hierarchical distributed model predictive control strategy to operate interconnected microgrids (MGs) with the goal of increasing the overall infeed of renewable energy sources. In particular, we investigate how renewable infeed of MGs can be increased by using a trans- mission network allowing the exchange of energy. To obtain an model predictive control scheme which is scalable with respect to the number of MGs and preserves their independent structure, we make use of the alternating direction method of multipliers leading to local controllers communicating through a central entity. This entity is in charge of the power lines and ensures that the constraints on the transmission capacities are met. The results are illustrated in a numerical case study.

© 2016, The Author(s). We consider supplier development within a supply chain consisting of a single manufacturer and a single supplier. Because investments in supplier development are usually relationship-specific, safeguard mechanisms against the hazards of partner opportunism have to be installed. Here, formal contracts are considered as the primary measure to safeguard investments. However, formal contracts entail certain risks, e.g., a lack of flexibility, particular in an ambiguous environment. We propose a receding horizon control scheme to mitigate possible contractual drawbacks while significantly enhancing the supplier development process and, thus, to increase the overall supply chain profit. Our findings are validated by a numerical case study.

The stability analysis of model predictive control schemes without terminal constraints and/or costs has attracted considerable attention during the last years. We pursue a recently proposed approach which can be used to determine a suitable optimization horizon length for nonlinear control systems governed by ordinary differential equations. In this context, we firstly show how the essential growth assumption involved in this methodology can be derived and demonstrate this technique by means of a numerical example. Secondly, inspired by corresponding results, we develop an algorithm which allows to reduce the required optimization horizon length while maintaining asymptotic stability or a desired performance bound. Last, this basic algorithm is further elaborated in order to enhance its robustness properties. © 2012 IFAC.
