Biography

Pamela Beach is a PhD student of the Newcastle Business School, University of Newcastle, Australia. Pamela’s PhD research is based in the field of human resources with particular interest in careers. The research will contribute to these fields and help to explain the barriers that hinder women’s careers in medicine from advancing such that they can have increased representation and enjoy senior careers in medicine. This research addresses the problem of a leaky pipeline, whereby women graduate from medical school in numbers as high as 50% (in western countries) however this percentage dissipates in industry. In industry, women make up considerably less representation with the numbers in Australian seeing that those in Orthopedic surgery having 1%, Cardiology having 6% and General Practitioners having 40% percent of women’s representation in these medical sub-specialties. Pamela’s aim is to become an academic at the end of her PhD. She has been an assistant teacher in 2020 and continues to hone her skills to become a professional academic in the future.
