Biography

About:

Lucy Egan (she/her) is a writer and artist as well as a second-year PhD candidate in Creative Writing (English) at the University of Newcastle and is based on Awabakal and Worimi Country. She is a recipient of the Australian Government Research Training Program scholarship, in the Academic Career Pathway, which nurtures emerging academics by providing opportunities for teaching experience.

Research:

Her research is around storying connections and relationships with elderly people and other-than-human beings (such as animals, plants and Country) through a lens and ethics of vulnerability.  

She is interested in environmental humanities, young adult literature, animal studies, embodiment and bodies, creative critical research and methodologies, art, creative writing and creative nonfiction. 

Achievements:

She has had stories published in Memory in Lockdown and been a presenting artist at the National Young Writers Festival in 2023. She has also been an artist-in residence and exhibiting artist at Lighthouse Arts. In 2024, she was a Youth Advisory Panel member at the Lock-Up as well as a member of the 2024 Creative Nonfiction cohort at Faber Writing Academy. She has presented conference papers and on a panel at the Australasian Association of Writing Programs in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, she also presented at the Emerging Writers Festival in Naarm/Melbourne as part of the Faber Writing Academy cohort.

Her 2025 Visualise Your Thesis video was selected as a finalist in the University's competition. Watch the video here as part of the University's HDR festival. She also received a Best Presentation award from her school as part of the festival for her creative reading.  

She also spoke about her PhD thesis and research on ABC Newcastle Radio as part of the afternoon program in November 2025. Listen to the interview here (2:41:00).
