Biography
Kelly-Jean is currently employed as an Associate Lecturer for the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy Program at the University of Newcastle. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Oral Health) graduating from the University of Queensland in 2004, a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (USYD) graduating in 2019, a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (UK), and she is a current candidate for the Masters of Education (Research) at USYD, expectant to graduate in Feb '23. Her research areas include inclusion oral health and higher education.
Kelly-Jean is an innovator in the emerging discipline of inclusion in oral health and draws on it to enhance students' ability to develop self-reflective practice. Future aspirations include Ph.D. candidature and a role in overcoming social exclusion in oral health.
Kelly-Jean joined the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists' Association (ADOHTA) NSW branch Executive Committee and has served as secretary and general executive committee member. She is a general member of the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia (DHAA) and the College of Oral Health Academics (COHA).
Kelly-Jean has been involved in the curriculum review of both the Bachelor of Oral Health program at the University of Sydney and the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program at the University of Newcastle. She enjoys creating and maintaining collegial relationships with all members of the Dental community and aims to set the gold standard of integrity and ethical practice for Oral Health Therapy.

Clinical Educator Clinical Education allowed me to become familiar with the Dental Education Curricula within the Bachelor of Oral Health Program and the opportunity to supervise undergraduates in various Local Health Districts within NSW. This clinically focused role supported my strong commitment to evidence-based practice and delivering patient-centered care, from history taking and examination to diagnosie and treatment planning. I was able to take my substantial clinical experience and offer it to students in various clinical setting such as general dental practice, periodontics, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. During this time, I developed a deeper understanding of personal teaching philosophy and my capacity as a reflective practitioner and teacher. Educational theory was introduced to me during this period and I was able to align myself with various theorists that supported the vision and mission of the university and my personally held core values and beliefs. |

Oral Health Promotion II College Health, Medicine and Wellbeing - The University of Newcastle (Australia) ORHL2105 builds on the knowledge gained in ORHL1103 and introduces the theories and approaches used in evaluating Oral Health Promotion projects. You will work with other students to plan and evaluate an oral health promotion project idea to present to your tutors and peers. In addition you will be introduced to research in population health which includes fundamental epidemiology and health statistics. You will complete a literature review and critical appraisal to support your evidence based practice and understanding of the literature. This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy. Oral Health Promotion III College of Health, Medicine & Wellbeing - The University of Newcastle ORHL3103 builds on the knowledge and skills gained in ORHL1103 and ORHL2105 and provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of oral health needs of the Elderly living in the community and in Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACF).
