Career Summary
Biography
Emily is a final year PhD candidate with more than four years experience as a casual academic in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries, and Social Sciences. Her research focusses on creativity and cultural production in Japanese to English literary translation.
Emily completed a Bachelor of Communication at the University of Newcastle (2017) and graduated with distinction. In 2018, she completed a Bachelor of Communication (honours) at the University of Newcastle, and graduated with Class I honours. Emily commenced her PhD candidature in 2020, also at the University of Newcastle.
She has taught into the Bachelor of Communication degree at the University of Newcastle since July, 2019 and has experience teaching in person and online. She has primarily taught into the degree's core theory courses, and has taught across all levels of the degree, gaining insights into the varying needs of the students as they navigate their study.
As a casual academic, her role is centered around the facilitation of student learning. Emily works in conjunction with the lecturer to ensure that students are able to discuss and clarify the week’s topics in a safe, structured learning environment and leave more knowledgeable than when they entered the classroom. She finds teaching to be highly rewarding in that she is given the opportunity to share her knowledge, experience, and skills with her students, and will hopefully positively shape their futures. Emily's teaching approach is based off her experiences as a student. She found that she was most engaged with the learning material when her tutors were knowledgeable on the subject matter but taught it in an accessible way, and this is how she aims to conduct her tutorials.
Emily presented her honours research titled 'The Creative Translator: An Ethnographic Study of Creativity in the Process of Translation' at the University of Cambridge in 2019. She also presented her paper, co-authored with Professor Phillip McIntyre, titled 'Translation, Creativity and Machine Translation: Japanese to English Literary Translator's Perceptions of Creativity in Translation' at the 2022 ANZCA conference in Wollongong.
