Career Summary
Biography
Dr Angeliek Verdonschot has a background in health and society and obtained her Dual Award Doctoral Degree PhD in nutrition education programs for primary schools at Wageningen University & Research (The Netherlands) and University of Newcastle (Australia).
She is currently enjoying her role as postdoctoral researcher at University of Newcastle and is the project manager of the evidence-based program 'Resistance Training for Teens', which includes an 8-week program focused on resistance training for high school students (14-16 years old).
Angeliek is passionate about improving health of the individual and not only does she practice this in her research, but also by being group fitness instructor at the Forum. Her research expertise lies in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs that aim to improve health in our younger population.

Micronutrients University of Newcastle The micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and trace elements) and macronutrients (fat, protein, carbohydrate and alcohol) are the essential nutrients in our foods. They play an important role in our body and impact our health and wellbeing. This course will discuss the biochemistry, food sources, absorption, metabolism, physiological functions, genetics, development and consequences of deficiency, dietary requirements and assessment, therapeutic use and toxicity. In the tutorial activities students will discuss dietary intake and learn about how suboptimal nutrition may affect human health, with particular attention to malnutrition and global hunger. This course includes traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander foods and ways of learning. On successful completion of this course, students will be able to explain the nutrient contents of food and the role and function of macronutrients and micronutrients in the body and their impact on health. |
