Career Summary

Biography

Adelle is a certified occupational hygienist (COH) and full member of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH) with more than 12 years occupational hygiene industrial experience before joining the University of Newcastle as a lecturer in Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology in 2014. in addition, she is currently undertaking her PhD in Environmental and Occupational Health through the University of Newcastle's School of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Medicine.

Research

Adelle's is passionate about worker health and quality of life, and her research is focussed on noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) in workplaces. Her PhD is aimed at determining why there are still so many workers suffering from NIHL, when it is an entirely preventable injury.  Her research investigate the hearing health of workers entering into the NSW Coal Mining Industry.  She works in collaboration with Coal Services health and the NSW Coal Mining Industry in order to provide detailed results on the hearing health of workers entering into their workplace, obtained from 30 years of audiometric testing results.  This will enable industry to develop and implement effective hearing conservation programs and  could significantly improve hearing health outcomes for workers, whilst also lowering the economic burden of noise induced hearing loss related compensation claims for workplaces.

In addition Adelle's research includes total worker health, looking at the current evidence base with which future directions can be established to maintain a healthy and efficient workforce as they age.

Roles and Collaborations

In addition to research and lecturing, Adelle has the following roles:

  • Member of the School of Health Sciences (SHS) Research Committee
  • SHS Early Career Research representative
  • Member of the Centre for Resources CRHS Working Group
  • Member of the AIOH Professional Development and Education Committee
  • AIOH Mentor

Defence Maritime Systems Division Hazardous Chemicals Remediation Technical Writing Project – Technical Writer & Risk Assessor for a Hazardous Chemical (HazChem) Review and Technical Writing Project with Australian Defence Maritime Systems Division (MSD).  This project involves review of maintenance documentation and inspection of technical maintenance tasks on a range of vessel types (platforms) across the Defence Maritime Systems Division to identify HazChem use and implement appropriate controls for the ongoing management of HazChem risks. The driving force behind this project is a DoD Enforceable Undertaking committed to developing and implementing a comprehensive and inclusive system for HazChem handling, use and management for compliance with the Commonwealth Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) Legislation

Open Cut and Underground Mines – Glencore-Xstrata / YanCoal / Blakefield / Rio Tinto – Project Manager. Development and implementation of a comprehensive occupational hygiene monitoring program, including statutory inhalable and respirable dust and respirable crystalline silica monitoring, diesel particulate matter, vibration and noise.  Adelle also did the technical analysis of the data and prepared the annual and statutory reports.

Boeing Australia, RAAF Base Williamtown & Newcastle City Council, Project Manager. Noise assessments of the maintenance workshop during different scenarios and developing noise contour maps based on the findings, including development of Hearing Conservation Plans

Hunter Water Corporation:  CIPP Incident Investigation and Management Review - Project Manager. For the incident investigation and incident management review following potential public chemical exposures during cured in place-pipe (CIPP) sewer re-lining works. This included incident reviews, modelling of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions dispersion, audit of client Health & Safety Management System compliance and monitoring of VOC air emissions and worker personal VOC exposures during the CIPP works. These reviews and investigations resulted in a detailed report that was provided to the Client Executive Management Team, with recommendations of ways to control VOC emissions to avoid further incidents, minimise VOC exposure risks, and improve incident management and investigation procedures.

University of Newcastle: Utilisation of computational fluid dynamics for modelling of potential formaldehyde exposure Occupational hygiene assessment of potential formaldehyde exposure utilising computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and personal exposure assessment to predict potential exposure for personnel and students in a proposed anatomy facility.

University of the Sunshine Coast – Work Health and Safety Consulting. Adelle was Project Manager for the University of the Sunshine Coast in a project involving revisions to the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Manual and development of new procedures for working confined spaces, noise, electrical safety and working at heights.
