Advancing UON’s global profile, engagement and partnerships

Winnie Eley joined The University of Newcastle, Australia in May 2013.

As a member of the Executive Committee at The University of Newcastle (UON), Winnie takes on strategic leadership of the University's inaugural global partnership plan which encompasses alumni relations and development, global engagement and footprints, institutional relations and reputation, philanthropy and sponsorship, student mobility and experience; and contributes to the achievement of the University's vision by 2025, NeW Futures Strategic Plan (2016-2025) and NeW Strategic Directions (2013-2015).

In her current capacity, Winnie chairs the Global Partnership Committee, Executive Committee of Newcastle International College and UON’s World University Rankings Advisory Group. She is a member of the University’s Teaching and Learning Committee, Research Committee, Strategic IT Committee and Programs and Courses Approval Committee. Winnie is an appointed auditor for the Quality Assurance Committee (2014-2019)of the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong. She has oversight of the Office of Alumni and Philanthropy, Confucius Institute, UON China and UON Global in the International and Advancement Division.

Winnie has over 15 years of senior management experience with appointed positions including founding director of international affairs and acting inaugural director of advanced executive education institute at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; deputy country director, director Abuja and director business services of the British Council in Nigeria; and director of education services for the British Council in Hong Kong. She has spent the last decade and a half in devising international development strategy; developing whole-institution approach and associated systems and partnerships in student mobility, institution relations, international education; and leading and managing a range of diverse portfolios from scholarships (Chevening, Ford Foundation and Scholarships for Excellence), science, creative industries, alumni relations, customer and information services, transnational education, marketing and communications, to high level policy collaborations.

Winnie completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in England at the University of Nottingham. She holds a first degree in education; has an MBA; and postgraduate research experience. She is qualified in TESOL and also an accredited administrator of MBTI Step I and II, and FIRO-B. Her recent professional and executive development included 'managing innovation strategically' at the Cambridge-MIT Institute, University of Cambridge; and 'authentic leadership programme' in Harvard Business School. Winnie is pursuing a DBA in Higher Education Management at the University of Bath, UK.
