Career Summary






Maryanne Dever is an Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Science. She holds degrees from the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney. Before coming to the University of Newcastle in 2010 she held positions at the University of Sydney, the University of Hong Kong and Monash University where she was an Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research.

Maryanne Dever is joint Editor-in-Chief of Australian Feminist Studies (Routledge/Taylor & Francis).

Maryanne Dever is recognised for her research in the areas of feminist literary and cultural studies and archive studies. Her current research focuses is on the status of archived paper with the advent of digital technologies.

She co-convenes, the 'archivefutures' research network, an international network of scholars and archivists engaged in speculative and theoretically informed  considerations of  archived manuscripts and personal papers.

Research expertise

Maryanne Dever's research encompasses archive studies, feminist literary and cultural history and digital humanities. Current research projects focus on issues of intimacy and materiality in relation to both research practice (methodology) and to the socio-cultural status of archived objects.

She also has on-going research interests in the area of gender, work and higher education and has published widely on women's and gender studies. She is particularly interested in everyday sexism and how it manifests itself in contemporary academe, the latter having developed as a key area of interest since her appointment at the University of Newcastle.

She was awarded the Inaugural Humanities Research Centre/Gender Institute Fellowship at the ANU for 2014. She has previously held the following research fellowships: Visiting Scholar, Institute for Sexuality, Gender and Feminism at McGill University (Nov 2011 - Feb 2012); Manning Clark House/Copyright Agency of Australia Fellowship, Canberra (2009); Visiting Scholar, McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women (MCRTW), McGill University, Montreal, Canada (April - June 2008 ); Bank of Montreal Visiting Scholar in Women's Studies, Institute of Women's Studies, University of Ottawa, Canada (Jan - March 2008); Visiting Scholar, School of Research Studies and Women's Studies Research Centre, University of Hong Kong (January 1997); Harold White Fellowship, National Library of Australia, Canberra, (1995).

She has received funding from: the Australian Research Council and the Sidney Myer Fund.

Maryanne Dever is the co-founder and co-convenor (with Linda Morra) of the 'Archive Futures' international research network. The network hosts innovative research events in a variety of locations internationally.


Administrative expertise

Maryanne Dever has substantial leadership and management experience. Her previous posts have included: Director of the Centre for Women's Studies & Gender Research (1999 - 2007); Research Coordinator in the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University (2005-2006); Chair of the Faculty of Arts OSP Committee, Monash University (2009-2010).

She has completed a comprehensive programme of formal leadership and management training. She has experience and training in performance management and change management.

Teaching expertise

Maryanne Dever has extensive programme management, teaching and curriculum development experience across literary studies, women's and gender studies, and cultural studies. She has received a series of awards and citations for her teaching, including the Dean of Arts Award for Excellence in Teaching and Curriculum Development, Monash University (2008). She held a 2011 University of Newcastle Teaching and Learning Fellowship.

She is an experienced graduate supervisor and has supervised more than 16 higher degree theses to completion. She would be particularly interested to work with high-calibre students on the following: engagements with literary archives; key questions in gender and higher education; gender and cultural production.
