Career Summary

Biography

I began my career in education as a secondary teacher of mathematics, physics and chemistry, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (1983) and Diploma in Education (1984) from the University of Newcastle. I taught in secondary schools in NSW, ACT and Qld before returning to the University of Newcastle to complete a Master of Educational Studies in 1999. As part of that degree I completed a minor thesis titled “The relationship between learning strategies, self-regulatory control and academic achievement for postgraduate and undergraduate business students”. In 2006 I was awarded my PhD in applied mathematics from Monash University. The thesis was titled “Australian Multi-Sector Managed Funds: Essays on Performance Evaluation and Related Issues”.

I was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle in June 2001 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in January 2009. During that time I have been the program convenor for both undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics teacher education programs. I was responsible for the co-development of a postgraduate mathematics retraining program for teachers wishing to retrain as secondary mathematics teachers.

From 2009 to 2011 I was the Deputy Head of School (Services) and Acting Head of School for 6 months in 2011. I am currently the Deputy Head of School (Research) responsible for all Research Higher Degree students in the School of Education. I am a founding member of the Teachers and Teaching research group and member of the Priority Research Centre Computer-assisted research mathematics and its applications (CARMA), where I co-lead the Mathematics Education Group.

Research expertise

I have been an academic in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle since 2001. I completed my PhD in applied mathematics in 2006. The PhD was highly quantitative and examined methods of modelling the performance of managed funds. I have continued my interest in financial modelling through recent publications related to the development of a concentration measure for assessing the socioeconomic impact of gaming machines.

In terms of education research I have been involved in projects related to effective integration of new technologies as educational tools both in the higher education setting and in relation to the teaching of mathematics in schools.

In 2011-2012 I was a chief investigator on an $56,000 international project 'Innovative Teaching and Learning'. The project examined the factors related to the effective integration of technology in 23 schools in NSW. Findings from the project have been published in international and Australian peer-reviewed journals.

I have also been a part of research projects funded by individual schools, aiming to investigate ways to improve pedagogical practices, particularly with regard to ICT integration.

I am currently a Chief Investigator on an ARC Linkage grant ($1,000,000) from 2012-2105, exploring the factors related to the educational and career aspirations of students in the middle years of schooling. Linked to this project I am a chief investigator on a $75,000 project funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education, titled "Choosing Uni: The impact of schools and schooling".
