Research expertise
John Kellaway was born in Newcastle. As a conductor John studied with Ulric Burstein (the late Founder of the Hunter Orchestra). John has directed the New Life Singers, Metropolitan Players, Sound Construction Company, Hunter Opera, Newcastle Police Citizens Youth Club Brass Band, Maitland City Brass Band, Sophisticated Swing Jazz Orchestra and various other ensembles including the Novocastrian Arts Orchestra (N.A.O), the University Conservatorium Brass Choir and the Hunter Symphony Orchestra. His interest in early music led to him being appointed the conductor of "I Medici", a chamber orchestra in 1993.
In the Newcastle Spring Festival 1995 John conducted the N.A.O. and Opera Hunter in Newcastle's Opera in the Park. In 1992/93 he was awarded a University DEET Teaching Grant for the Collation of a Trumpet and Piano Tertiary Student Resource Book. In 1994 he travelled to London under a Research Management Grant to research 17th and 18th Century English slide trumpet performance techniques. In 1995 he was invited to the USA to perform at the International Brass Festival (Indiana University, Bloomington), and in 1997 was invited to perform and conduct in Belgium and Sweden.
John is an adjudicator and music advisor to the Band Associations of NSW and has adjudicated in most Australian states. John is responsible for organising the Festival of Brass and Percussion held at the Newcastle Conservatorium each year. In 1994 John formed the first Australian chapter of the International Trumpet Guild at the University of Newcastle.
At Newcastle Conservatorium, John Kellaway is head of Brass studies, a lecturer in trumpet, and a lecturer in conducting to final year BMus undergraduate students
