Following an international search in 2012, the University welcomed Professor Andrew Parfitt to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Professor Parfitt was selected from a highly competitive pool of extremely talented academics. Professor Parfitt was outstanding amongst his peers in his strategic foresight, business acumen and thorough knowledge of the academic and higher education environment.

Professor Parfitt was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor and Vice President, Faculty of IT, Engineering and the Environment at the University of South Australia.

"With an emphasis on the student experience, Professor Parfitt has championed innovative academic approaches and practices, particularly in the areas of multi-disciplinary program development, the delivery of high quality online learning and working to ensure course design meets the needs of graduate employers," said Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen.

Professor Parfitt also has an international reputation as a specialist in antenna and radio systems, with a focus on space science and technology. His career highlights include leading the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems, the national research group responsible for launching FedSat, which was Australia's first satellite in 30 years.

He holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Adelaide, and has held adjunct academic positions at the University of South Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

In a professional capacity, Professor Parfitt is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has been Chair of both its South Australia and New South Wales Sections. He is Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Radio Science, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and until taking up his appointment in Newcastle was a board member of key industry associations the Defence Teaming Centre and the Technology Industry Association.

Biography

Professor Andrew Parfitt is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) with responsibility for the University's teaching and learning agenda, and quality assurance and strategic planning processes. Prior to his appointment at the University of Newcastle, Professor Parfitt held the position of Pro Vice Chancellor and Vice President of the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment at the University of South Australia. Previously, he was the Director of UniSA's Institute for Telecommunications Research (ITR) (2004 - 2007), one of Australia's foremost ICT research organisations.

Professor Parfitt has had an outstanding career as a specialist in antenna and radio systems and more recently in areas relating to space science and technology. He holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Adelaide, and has held adjunct academic positions at the University of South Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

In a professional capacity, Professor Parfitt is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has been Chair of both its South Australia and New South Wales sections. He is Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Radio Science, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a board member of the Defence Teaming Centre and the Technology Industry Association.

Research Expertise

Professor Parfitt's major areas of research include:

  • Antenna and radio systems,
  • Wireless telecommunication systems,
  • Satellite communications, satellite systems and satellite engineering,
  • Radar and communications to satellite systems and radio astronomy technologies,
  • Space science and technology.

Professor Parfitt has had an outstanding research career as a specialist in antenna and radio systems and has published over 100 technical papers in conferences and journals, mainly in the areas of antenna design, integrated radio frequency systems, computational electromagnetism and satellite systems.



Teaching Expertise

In addition to his comprehensive research and administrative activities, Professor Parfitt has had extensive teaching experience. During his tenure as Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of South Australia, Professor Parfitt was responsible for significant increases in student satisfaction with their programs in several ways:

  • Introducing Associate Degrees as pathways for engineering and IT,
  • Commencing common first years for engineering, built environment and IT programs,
  • The creation of innovative teaching and learning spaces, development of an online education strategy and significant curriculum renewal across all program clusters in his Division.

Professor Parfitt has supervised PhD students at University of Adelaide, Macquarie University and University of Sydney. He has also examined Australian PhD theses for a number of Australian universities including the University of Queensland, RMIT University and the Australian National University.

Professor Parfitt held the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide (1992 - 98), supervising over fifty final year and third year projects during that time, and has lectured at the University of Sydney, CRC for Satellite Systems, DSTO and Macquarie University.



Administrative Expertise

Professor Parfitt has an outstanding record of administrative experience, including his most recent role as Pro Vice Chancellor (Division of IT, Engineering and the Environment) at the University of South Australia from 2007 - 12. The Division’s research income was increased to nearly double during his tenure, including securing a $40m contribution from the Commonwealth Government’s Education Investment Fund for the new Materials and Minerals Science Building. Professor Parfitt also acted for a number of extended periods as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), and was fully responsible for the development of UniSA’s 2012 ERA submission in all disciplines.

Professor Parfitt has previously held the position of Director of the Institute for Telecommunications Research - one of the two non-Division based research institutes within the University of South Australia. He was also CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems from 2003 - 05, a position that was responsible for the FedSat small satellite program - Australia’s first satellite in 30 years.

In addition to his appointment at the University of Newcastle, Professor Parfitt currently holds the position of Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Radio Science, President of the Australian National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Defence Systems Innovation Centre.



Collaborations

As Director of the Institute for Telecommunications Research at the University of South Australia, Professor Parfitt was responsible for leading one of the two non-Division based research institutes within the University, with the majority of the Institute’s funding contributed by external sources through contract research and research partnerships and maintained significant links with a wide range of industry partners. While in this role, he was also a member of the University’s Research Policy Committee.

Professor Parfit has also had significant collaborative experience within industry. He served as CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems, a national research group that comprised six universities, two government research agencies and four industry partners, from 2003 – 2005. While at CSIRO he led the Space and Satellite Communication Systems team from 2001 – 2003, and later held the position of General Manager of Space Programs.

A Ka-band transponder system has been designed for the microsatellite FedSat-1. The transponder will allow propagation and communication experiments over the three year lifetime of the satellite, supporting the further development of space systems and the modeling of lifetime performance of the Ka-band monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) components. The transponder will provide a means of testing the benefits of small, low power and low cost satellites.
