Tax clinic established at Newcastle Business School to assist the disadvantaged and vulnerable
Disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the Hunter community will have access to free tax advice and assistance following the announcement by Assistant Treasurer the Hon. Michael Sukkar of the expansion of the National Tax Clinic program. The Newcastle Business School in partnership with the Newcastle Law School at the University of Newcastle has been awarded $300,000 under the program.
The funds will be used to establish an independent tax clinic at the University’s Greater Bank Finance Lab from 2022-2024.
Administered by the Australian Tax Office, the program sees students studying tax-related programs provide advice and support to those who may not be able to afford it, including individuals, small businesses and charities.
Professor Christina Boedker and Mr Christian O'Connor will manage the clinic, while a registered tax agent will supervise students and check any tax returns, which must be signed off by a registered tax agent before being lodged.
