Friends of the University Book Fair Raises Over $100,000 for Student Scholarships
People flocked to Newcastle’s favourite ‘pop- up’ bookshop as the Friends of the University of Newcastle returned with their famous biennial Book Fair last month.
The first Saturday was particularly popular, becoming the biggest single day in the Book Fair’s history. Together, the Friends, along with students, staff, alumni and community members, raised a record amount to support deserving students to reach their goals through student scholarships.
Since the first Book Fair 36 years ago, the Friends of the University of Newcastle have raised over $1.1 million for scholarships and projects at the University.
It was terrific to see the campus buzzing with staff, students, alumni and community members for this great event. It is wonderful that so many people came to take advantage of this amazing resource and help support students facing hardship. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of the Friends of the University and for all the lives they change through their generous giving and volunteering.” - Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO
A huge thank you to the team of 50 volunteers who donate their time throughout the year to collect and sort items, and the additional volunteers called upon for the eight day event in the Great Hall. Thank you also to everyone who supported the event by purchasing books, CDs, records and other items.
