Over the last few months, we have been thrilled to welcome three new PhD scholars, funded under the UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice and Higher Education at the University of Newcastle. Shay Greig will explore class struggle, gender, and power within the higher education experiences and outcomes for working class students in the Illawarra, working with Penny Jane Burke and Matthew Bunn; Luz Gamarra Caballero will examine Indigenous women’s success in higher education in both Australia and Peru, working with Penny, Kathleen Butler and Julia Coffey; and Ernestina Nyaaba will build understandings of the impact of gender-based violence on higher education access in Ghana, working with Penny and Julia.

"One of the greatest joys of academic work is supervising doctoral research and walking alongside a PhD candidate as they develop an important research agenda. I am so excited to have the privilege of working with these three wonderful women within the framework of the UNESCO Chair to mobilise higher education as a force for equity and social justice. They each bring significant experience and knowledge to their research, drawing on the contexts of their personal, professional and student lives, and it will be my pleasure to see their research develop to contribute to processes of transformative change. It is fantastic to be part of the commitment they bring to their studies but also the co-support they have already demonstrated for one another. It has been particularly special to have our Ghanaian UNESCO Chair partner, and my former PhD student, Dr Gifty Oforiwaa Gyamera, here in Newcastle with us as the three PhD scholars embark on their research." (Penny Jane Burke)

“Already, I have developed connections with my fellow UNESCO PhD Students, Tina and Luz, and I am so excited to work with these incredible women to share our knowledge, understandings and experiences through future collaborations and research.” (Shay).

“I am excited to discuss, exchange ideas and learn with my supervisors (Penny Jane Burke, Julia Coffey and Kathleen Butler) in a collaborative way – promoting a praxis-based social justice framework.” (Luz)

“As a women and girls activists who is so passionate about their well-being, I will explore the impeding factor thus GBV to their participation in higher education and the ways it could be mitigated to create a smoother path towards their attainment of higher education.” (Ernestina)
