What is SEO and how to achieve it

Think about how you use the web and how you search for things. Do you look past the first page of search results? Do you read the description under the URL to find out whether the page is what you are looking for?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is about building a web page that will rank high in the search results and contain the right information in the search results that will make people click through to your page.

It is a combination of the way you build the page (eg headings) and the words you include.

How to achieve SEO

The first thing to remember is that if your web content is working for your audience, most of the time it will work for search engines.

  1. A critical first step is to take the time to plan your content. Think about who you want to talk to, what you want them to know and what you need them to do.
  2. Headings (H1, H2, H3 tags) are also very important for search. Make your headings very clear and descriptive. eg. If the paragraph talks about the services available on campus, make the heading “Services on Campus” or something similar.
  3. Keep language to the point and on topic. Again, if it is getting your information across to your audience it will most likely be working for search engines.
  4. Always add a page description (usually 140-160 characters) that describes what your page is about in the Dublin Core section of the Metadata screen.

The Adding a standard page article has information about how to use headings effectively and how to enter a page description.
