About

The Coal Mining Geomechanics course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the mechanics of soils and rocks as they relate to the management of coal mining operations. It is aimed at technical and operations staff who are responsible for the safe conduct of coal mining operations.

This course will facilitate improved understanding and interpretation of common geotechnical phenomena encountered in mining, underpin more informed decisions and promote more effective dialogue between geotechnical professionals and technical staff.

What you will study

The course is aimed at technical and operations staff who are responsible for the safe conduct of coal mining operations.

The following topics will be covered:

  • fundamental behaviours of soils and rocks
  • basic mechanics of geomaterials
  • important properties of soils, rocks, joints and rock masses
  • the role of water in geomechanical behaviour
  • stability of waste dumps and highwalls
  • rockfall behaviour and assessment

There are no entry requirements for this short course.

Assessments

A report on a current site geotechnical hazard and risk management controls, to be submitted after the course concludes, and completed to a satisfactory standard (ungraded).

Course recognition

Yes, certificates of completion will be provided, upon satisfactory completion of the assessment item.

Credit

Credit cannot be obtained for this course.

Meals

Lunch will be provided. A dinner will also be arranged for Wednesday night of the course. Please advise of any dietary requirements.
