The University of Newcastle, Australia

Textbooks and Equipment

Each course has different requirements when it comes to textbooks and equipment. The specific requirements for each of your courses will be provided in the Course Outline, which will be posted to Blackboard by the Course Coordinator, usually the week before classes start. These details will also be provided in your first lecture.

Most students will need to buy textbooks and/or course readers. These are available in person and online from the Co-op Bookshop.

For second-hand books, check out Textbook Exchange – The University of Newcastle Facebook page for textbooks from other UON students, or try the national Student VIP Textbooks Exchange.

Textbooks and course readings are also available to borrow in the University libraries and are often online.

Tip: You can do a text list search for individual courses at the Co-op Bookshop to get an idea about textbooks, but be sure to confirm with your course coordinator.

Basic equipment for uni

For your day-to-day life at uni you will also need some equipment to help you stay organised. This will probably be unique to you and how you work best. Some people like to bring a laptop, tablet or other device to record notes in class. Others prefer a notepad and pen.

You will also need a way to keep track of your timetable, what you have to do each day and your to-do lists. Calendars, Notes and other apps in your device might be useful for this, or you may prefer an old-school diary. It doesn’t really matter what it is, as long as you find a method that works and stick to it. And make sure you pick up your Student Central wall planner at orientation or at one of our locations on campus in the first couple of weeks. It’s your University of Newcastle year-at-a-glance and is a great way to stay organised.

Free software and digital tools for students

All students have access to a range of free software – including Microsoft Office - while they are enrolled at the University of Newcastle.  Save some money and be sure to have a look at what software and tools are available to you before you get started.

Placement

Some programs will have placement requirements. There are associated costs and other considerations to be taken into account when you are on placement.

Program specific equipment and requirements

When it comes to requirements other than textbooks, some programs and courses require you to purchase things like equipment, instruments, computers, uniforms, shoes, police checks, and vaccinations. Search for your program in the list below to see what extra requirements it may have. This will help you plan your budget and be prepared.

Remember, these are approximate costs and the requirements are subject to change. The best advice is not to purchase anything until you have confirmation from your program convenor or course coordinator. They make every effort to provide the information you need at Orientation and in the first few weeks of class, an even better reason to make sure you attend.

* Extra program requirements are subject to change. Other programs with extra requirements may not be listed here. Check with your program convenor and course co-ordinators for confirmation.
