The economy of Newcastle, one of Australia's earliest settlements, was founded on coal, steel, manufacturing and the role of Newcastle Harbour as a major port. During the past decade, this economic base has been recast with an increased focus on education, research and innovation. The city is emerging as a Univer-city and a global knowledge hub, positioned to drive world-class innovation to address the challenges and opportunities of our time. Our partners also benefit from gaining access to cutting-edge research and first-class facilities located in the beautiful coastal city of Newcastle, Australia's 8th largest city – a short drive to the Hunter Wine Region and under two hours' drive to Sydney.
