My journey at UON Singapore was a fruitful and fulfilling one. As a media analyst in a Singapore-based company, I am now incorporating what I have learnt in both my majors when I analyse trends, gather insights about media coverage gained by our clients and come up with the best strategies that will help them move forward. As I move along in my career, I realise that the theories that was taught while enrolled in Newcastle’s Communication program (Major in Public Relations and Journalism) now help as a guideline in my practical work assignments and shape my grasp of how the media industry works

From public speaking to pitching a story and preparing campaign presentations during my studies, I learned truly valuable lessons. Everything I do on the job today began as a lesson as a University of Newcastle undergraduate. The Bachelor of Communication program (Major in Public Relations and Journalism) and the lecturers involved have had a lasting impact on me in the workplace as a writer and news anchor. The double major allowed me to graduate with a competitive edge over graduates from other institutions and secure a position in the field shortly after completing my degree.

Newcastle’s Communication program (Major in Public Relations and Journalism) has provided me with so many opportunities that I used to believe were beyond my grasp. The double major in Journalism and Public Relations has endowed me with the best of both worlds. I have learnt how to help my clients communicate effectively with different audiences and I am better equipped to use the power of words to make a difference. Currently working in the marketing communications industry and writing thought leadership articles for C-level executives, I always remember what my lecturers taught me: theory must apply to reality. At the end of the day, the ability to apply so much that I’ve learnt at UON Singapore never ceases to amaze me.

In Newcastle’s Communication program (Major in Public Relations and Journalism), I picked up and honed the skillets that my employers were looking for and that I now apply on a daily basis – such as journalistic writing, digital art and photography – in handing the production of custom publications and periodicals. The academic rigor that I was exposed to during my studies has enabled me to be much more cautious and discerning when I carry out research for writing projects as part of my work in the publishing industry.
