Student Experiences and Learning Outcomes

Embarking on the business programme with University of Newcastle, I had the opportunity to experience two vastly different campus life - with the Singapore campus and Callaghan campus in Australia. While both campuses had a wide array of school events, the nature of the activities differed based on the different ethnic groups present. The Singapore campus mainly comprised of Southeast Asian students, while the Australian campus saw greater diversity from other places in the world. Despite the cultural differences, the teachers in both campuses were friendly and tried their best to create an interactive environment for the students to learn from one another. I do not regret my dual campus experience as it brought me a different perspective on my choice of study, as well as the different cultures and people that I encountered.

My journey at UON Singapore was a fruitful and fulfilling one. As a media analyst in a Singapore-based company, I am now incorporating what I have learnt in both my majors when I analyse trends, gather insights about media coverage gained by our clients and come up with the best strategies that will help them move forward. As I move along in my career, I realise that the theories that was taught while enrolled in Newcastle’s Communication program now help as a guideline in my practical work assignments and shape my grasp of how the media industry works

From public speaking to pitching a story and preparing campaign presentations during my studies, I learned truly valuable lessons. Everything I do on the job today began as a lesson as a University of Newcastle undergraduate. The Bachelor of Communication program and the lecturers involved have had a lasting impact on me in the workplace as a writer and news anchor. The double major allowed me to graduate with a competitive edge over graduates from other institutions and secure a position in the field shortly after completing my degree.

Emelli Putri, Bachelor of Communication

Newcastle’s Communication program has provided me with so many opportunities that I used to believe were beyond my grasp. The double major in Journalism and Public Relations has endowed me with the best of both worlds. I have learnt how to help my clients communicate effectively with different audiences and I am better equipped to use the power of words to make a difference. Currently working in the marketing communications industry and writing thought leadership articles for C-level executives, I always remember what my lecturers taught me: theory must apply to reality. At the end of the day, the ability to apply so much that I’ve learnt at UON Singapore never ceases to amaze me.

Faculty Commendation List

In Newcastle’s Communication program, I picked up and honed the skillets that my employers were looking for and that I now apply on a daily basis – such as journalistic writing, digital art and photography – in handing the production of custom publications and periodicals. The academic rigor that I was exposed to during my studies has enabled me to be much more cautious and discerning when I carry out research for writing projects as part of my work in the publishing industry.

UON-MBA's approach to management education embraces holistic learning and its emphasis on teamwork allows for thought-provoking exchanges with fellow students, all of whom come from different countries and with a myriad of experiences. I carried this model of teamwork with me into my workplace.

As a Consumer Operations Specialist at Google, I work with multiple product accounts, envision better processes, reliably operate them and continually improve them with customer satisfaction being one of the core process parameters. I have the ability to collaborate and make better decisions. With this, I only have UON Singapore to thank for expanding my horizons of learning and strengthening a host of critical skills that I am actively using in my current job.

I recently got promoted in my job role here at Google as an Operations Analyst. This has been a great milestone for me. I have also taken up key leadership roles here and worked on various projects with stakeholders across the globe.
