Prominent graduates from Singapore
The University of Newcastle is proud to acknowledge the achievements and success of all its international alumni. Below is a snapshot of some of our prominent alumni from Singapore, who are now recognised as leaders and achievers in business, industry, government and professions.
Professor Chan Heng Chee
Professor Chan was presented with a Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of Newcastle in 1994. She has occupied the position of Singapore's Ambassador to the United States of America since July 1996 and is heavily involved in research and issues relating to politics in Singapore, South-East Asia and international security.
Professor Chen Swee Eng
Professor Chen completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Newcastle as a Colombo Plan Scholar in 1980, finishing with first class honours and a University Medal. He has subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Architecture and a Doctor of Philosophy at Newcastle. Until 2005, Professor Chen held the position of Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. In recognition of Professor Chen's 20 years of service to the University of Newcastle, he has been appointed as Patron of the University of Newcastle's Alumni Chapter Singapore.
Mrs Cheong-Chua Koon Hean
Mrs Cheong completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Newcastle as a Colombo Plan Scholar in 1981, finishing with first class honours and a University Medal. She currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Housing Development Board in Singapore and Deputy Secretary of Ministry of National Development (Singapore).
Dr S Chandra Das
Dr Das was presented with a Doctor of Business honoris causa by the University of Newcastle in 2004. In 1993, Chandra Das was appointed as Chairman of NTUC Fairprice Cooperative Ltd, the cooperative supermarket launched in 1973 by Singapore's National Trades Union Congress. He has also received recognition for his achievements from all over the world, including Golden Cross of Merit of Poland, 1991, Rochdale Medal from the Singapore National Cooperative Federation Ltd in 1998; the President's Medal from the Singapore Australian Business Council in 2000; the Distinguished Services Award from the National Trades Union Congress in 2001; and the Global Award for Promotion of International Business and Cooperative Movement by Priyadarshini Academy (Mumbai) in 2002.
Dr Khaw Boon Wan
As a Colombo Plan Scholar, Dr Khaw Boon Wan completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering with Honours Class I as well as a Bachelor of Commerce. He was also awarded the University Medal for academic excellence. In 2002, the University presented a Doctor of Engineering honoris causa to Dr Khaw. He currently holds the position of Minister for National Development in Singapore and charged with the responsibility of making housing affordable and accessible to all Singaporeans. Dr Khaw is also recognised as a Patron of the University of Newcastle's Alumni Chapter in Singapore.
Mr Alvin Lee
Mr Lee completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Newcastle in 1998 and since this time has established a career as an innovator and entrepreneur. He founded and managed a highly successful dot.com throughout the late nineties, selling an award-winning toy system with US manufacturing and distribution partners. In recent years, Mr Lee has written a book and instructional manual for personal and corporate training, encouraging people to use their creativity and innovation to succeed in life and work. He is now recognised as a highly successful motivator/trainer in Singapore.
Dr Chew Heng Ching
Dr Chew, a Colombo Plan Scholar, graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1974 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree with Honours Class I and University Medal as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Dr Chew was also awarded a Doctor of Engineering honoris causa by the University in 2003 and is a Patron of the University of Newcastle's Alumni Chapter Singapore. He is actively involved in the management and boards of several public companies.
Dr Tan Chin Nam
Dr Tan received a Colombo Plan Scholarship to study at the University of Newcastle and completed a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering with Honours Class I as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Economics. In 1998, Dr Tan was awarded a Doctor of Engineering honoris causa. He had a long and distinguished career in Singapore's public service holding various key appointments before completing his term as a Permanent Secretary is 2007. He currently holds the position of Chairman in the Temasek Management Services Pte Ltd and Global Fusion Capital Pte Ltd.
