School research

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is active in many areas of research.

Our research groups in mathematics, physics and statistics attract funding from industry, the highly competitive Australian Research Council Grant schemes and other governmental organisations.

Our researchers are involved with four of the University's Priority Research Centres and the School is home to the Centre for Optimal Planning and Operations (C-OPT), which provides a scientific and mathematical basis for the decisions that are made in many areas of business, industry and government.

Our research publications have a strong impact, as indicated by high citation rates, and we have a particularly strong national profile in mathematics.

We have internationally recognised expertise in the areas of analysis, number theory, optimisation, surface physics, plasma waves and statistics.

Finally, we are strongly committed to research training, with many PhD and research masters students from both Australia and overseas.

The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
