History, English, Languages and Screens
The History, English, Languages and Screens group coordinates scholarly collaborations between our team of people in the areas of ancient and modern history, English and writing, philosophy, screen and cultural studies, and the modern languages German, French, Japanese and Chinese. Each year we curate a suite of public lectures, seminars, conferences, gallery exhibitions, podcasts, our finest student projects, new academic publications, as well as open access and university degree level courses.
- We both create works of literature and study the manifold ways such works are produced and distributed in different media over time. Our research nexuses include the Centre for Literary and Linguistic Computing as well as the Early Modern Women Research Network. We also collaborate with the Gender Research Network, which is a key contributor to the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women campaign in Newcastle.
- In order to enrich our region’s cultural heritage we network with a variety of organisations from Newcastle through to the rest of the world. Our research collaborations include the Centre for the Study of Violence, the Future of Madness Network, and the Wine Studies Research Network. This rich environment fosters projects supported by funding from the Australian Research Council and prestigious cultural sector grants.
- Our areas of research expertise feature prominently in the teaching of the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degrees, where the nation's largest course in Australian history features. In the Diploma in Languages we also provide study pathways in languages such as French, German, Japanese and Chinese from beginner to advanced levels. From open-access courses to PhD research, we advance unique opportunities to analyse diverse media in the context of their distinctive languages.
