School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences
Social Sciences and Linguistics
The Social Sciences and Linguistics group brings together a distinctive combination of research, theory and practice to make sense of and respond to critical challenges of our time. Our team of people examine the development, structure and regulation of human society, drawing on our collective expertise in sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and human services. We apply this expertise through social research informing social policy, planning and service delivery, the media and politics.
- Students have the opportunity to contribute to problem-solving in their local communities through Career Ready Placements, which is a key feature of our areas of study in the Bachelor of Social Science and Bachelor of Arts programs. At post-graduate levels, students can go on to advance their academic and applied research skills through our Research Higher Degree program, the Masters of Social Change and Development, or our new Master of Translation Studies.
- The group has a ‘glocal’ focus – looking for solutions to local problems, drawing on best practice through our research, policy and professional networks in our region, across Australia, and across the globe. Our research networks include the Centre for Youth Studies, the Alternative Futures and Regional Prospects Research Network, Environmental Humanities Network, as well as the ELDTA Linguistic Research Program. Our researchers are also part of the Society, Health and Disability Research Group, and the Centre for the Study of Violence.
