TUNRA Bulk Solids Industry Placement Scholarship

The Industry Placement Scholarship Scheme is focused on recruiting and supporting talented students within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The aim of the scheme is to developing future industry leaders across the full range of disciplines within the Faculty. This current scholarship strives to contribute to this aim in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
The Scholarship offers financial support to students commencing in the Faculty’s Industry Placement undergraduate program in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering. As a part of their commitment, TUNRA will provide the opportunity for the recipient to undertake industry placements (as required by their program) over the duration of their studies.
TUNRA Bulk Solids offers services for all industries dealing with bulk solid materials. Each year, TUNRA Bulk Solids completes between 200 and 250 major industrial consultancy projects which cover the entire spectrum of applications related to bulk solids handling, transportation and storage. In parallel with commercial contract research and consulting activities, TUNRA Bulk Solids provides a mechanism for technology transfer by research output and ensuring the expertise gained is widely disseminated and utilised by industry worldwide. The strength of TUNRA Bulk Solids lies in its links with the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle.

One scholarship is available midyear 2021. Current students are encouraged to apply between 1 July and 9 August to be considered in this round.
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in 1st year of the Industry Placement version of a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering or Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree at the University of Newcastle, Callaghan Campus.
- Be enrolled full-time.
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
- Be an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident (includes New Zealand Permanent Residents).
If documentation is not provided your application will not be processed. Please have all required documents available for upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files prior to completing the online application process.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you.
- The application will include a free text question asking you to outline your interest in associated future opportunities with this donor and/or Industry partner.
- A current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
The Industry Placement Scholarship provides a benefit of $10,000 per annum for up to four years to be paid in two equal lump sums following the Semester 1 and Semester 2 census dates each year.
As a part of the Industry Placement Scholarship, TUNRA will also provide the successful applicant the opportunity to undertake all industry placements within their workplace in order to satisfy the requirements of their degree program.
Selection is a competitive process and will follow a two stage process. Step one will be the establishment of a shortlist based on assessment of the scholarship application and supporting documents. Step two will be an interview of shortlisted candidates by a selection panel.
The selection panel will consist of a minimum of 3 members including an academic member of university staff as Discipline Representative and a representative from the Sponsor Company. Applications will be ranked against the following criteria:
- Demonstrated academic performance,
- Demonstrated interest and aptitude in the discipline, and,
- Performance at interview.
Where there are no eligible applicants after a maximum of two rounds per year then the scholarship will not be offered for that year.
The Selection Committee will communicate the details of successful recipients to the delegated Scholarships Officer, and all applicants will be notified of an outcome via email. This will occur within 6 weeks of the scholarship close date.
