This scholarship was established by the Hunter Environmental Institute to encourage and support students in the final year of an undergraduate degree related to environmental studies. The Institute seeks to reward students who demonstrate excellence in achievement and commitment in their environmental programs at the University of Newcastle. Two (2) scholarships are offered each year.

Applicable to: Environmental studies, high achievers, final year students, Environmental Science and Management, Engineering (Environmental)


To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management OR Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Environmental) program.
  • Be enrolled full-time (minimum 30 units).
  • Be an Australian Citizen or Be a Permanent Resident
  • Not have previously received this scholarship.
Required Documentation

  • A written statement demonstrating contribution(s) you have made to community environmental advancement/involvement. Work experience (paid) and coursework projects undertaken for your career advancement should be included
  • At least one written reference of up to two pages in length from a referee who knows you well - each reference will be well regarded in supporting merit claims in academic or community based involvement.

Two (2) scholarships are available, valued at $1500 each. These are payable in a lump sum payment after the relevant census date.


Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit, your statement submitted with the application, and your contribution to community environmental activities.

The Selection Committee may request academic references from the Program Co-ordinators of the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)(Environmental), where it feels this will help determine the best applicant. The Selection Committee may also contact you or your referees to answer additional questions where it feels this will help determine the best applicant.
