Booking and training

Step 1: Register for iLab

iLab is our online instrument booking system.

You can register to access iLab at

Use your University of Newcastle credentials to complete the registration.

Step 2: Pay your annual subscription

Subscription fees apply to all individuals wishing to use the EMX equipment, with the exception of undergraduate and honours students.

Subscriptions are valid for the calendar year (i.e., January to December) and help cover the cost of consumables and equipment maintenance and repair.

Your subscription enables access to all EMX equipment and also gives you access to technical support and training by EMX staff.

If you have not paid your annual subscription for this calendar year, log into iLab and go to the 'Request Services' tab to complete the subscription process.

Step 3: Register for online training

Before you can use any EMX equipment, you must complete the relevant online training.

To register for training:

  1. log into iLab
  2. go to the 'Request Services' tab
  3. select the equipment you need to be trained in.

Once you've completed the training, you'll receive a certificate of completion.  Upload the certificate to iLab, and then you'll be ready to book access to that specific piece of equipment.

Anyone wishing to use our X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) equipment must also complete the 'Radiation Safety for Unlicensed Users of X-Ray Equipment'.  This training is held two times per year on the Callaghan campus. You can register via Discover.

Step 4: Sign up for an EMX facility induction

In order to enter the EMX facility or use the equipment, you must complete a site induction.

Inductions are held once per month.  To sign-up for an induction:

  1. log into iLab
  2. go to the 'Request Services' tab
  3. select 'EMX Monthly Induction Request' to see available sessions.

All attendees must wear appropriate enclosed footwear.

Step 5: Book an instrument

Once steps 1 to 4 have been completed, you can book access to EMX equipment via iLab.

To book time with an instrument specialist, request a training booking on the required instrument via iLab's 'Schedule Equipment' tab.
