Holding promise to drive sustainable solutions to deliver better outcomes for Australia, three University of Newcastle engineering research projects will share in $1.7million funding awarded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Program.

Steel pipes, sunken ships, discarded weaponry and other decommissioned infrastructure corroding on the ocean floor are the subject of a new research project at the University of Newcastle.

The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Postgraduate Research Poster Prize competition had 59 students showcasing their research via the presentation of a poster.

Associate Professor Andrew Fleming, Professor Rob Atkin, Professor Erica Wanless, Dr Stuart Prescott, Professor Robert Melchers, Dr John Holdsworth, Dr Patrick Cullen and Associate Professor Patrick Spicer have been awarded $440,000 in ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) funding commencing in 2016 for a Facility for Nanometer Scale Microscopy, Characterization, and Fabrication.

Professor Rob Melchers and Dr Robert Jeffrey have been awarded $690,000 in ARC Discovery Project funding commencing in 2016 for their research project Long-term corrosion of offshore steel structures in near-stagnant seawater.

Professor Mark Stewart has been awarded $780,000 in ARC Discovery Project funding commencing in 2016 for his research project Risk-Based Decision-Making for Terrorism and Infrastructure Security.

The University of Newcastle (UON) has attracted more than $8 million from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to support innovative research projects including a study aimed at optimising global anti-terror security measures.

The University of Newcastle will host the 3rd International Conference on Protective Structures at Crowne Plaza Newcastle from February 3 to 6.
