The SISTAQUIT™ trial aims to improve health providers’ skills when offering smoking cessation care to pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Pregnancy is an important window of opportunity for GPs and health providers to help smokers quit, however they often lack the confidence and skills to address their patients’ smoking.

This intervention provides webinar-based training in evidence based and culturally competent smoking cessation care for providers working within Aboriginal Medical and Health Services.

The SISTAQUIT™ Team have completed recruiting Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) and other health providers involved in the care of pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. If you would like to find out more about the SISTAQUIT™ trial please contact A/Prof Dr Gillian Gould or Mrs Joley Foster from The University of Newcastle via email:

iSISTAQUIT [Implementation Phase] Recruiting Health Services Now

iSISTAQUIT [implement Supporting Indigenous Smokers To Assist Quitting] is a multi-component intervention aimed at improving health providers’ provision of smoking cessation care to pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, funded by the Commonwealth Government.

iSISTAQUIT builds on the success of the ICAN QUIT in Pregnancy and SISTAQUIT programs that were co-developed and piloted with Aboriginal communities, and being trialled nationally. iSISTAQUIT is associated with the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program.

iSISTAQUIT provides self-paced online training to health professionals via webinars, a treatment manual and patient resources to aid smoking cessation care. Services will receive a carbon monoxide breath monitor and supplies of NRT. iSISTAQUIT will be accompanied by a social marketing campaign to support pregnant women to quit smoking.
