Defence DST Group

In recent years ACSRC has collaborated with DST on several successful projects in various aspects of cyber security research. ACSRC has been the recipient of a project on Software Defined Networks (SDN) Security under the Competitive Evaluation Research Agreement (CERA) Program. We have recently established a new 3 year partnership with DST aimed at protecting communication networks against attacks in Software Defined Networks (SDN) Data Plane. We have a strong working relationship with a range of experts in DST’s research division, and have also had PhD scholarships with DST as well as student internships with ASD.

Data61/CSIRO

ACSRC has been collaborating with Data61/CSIRO in several research areas. These include Trust in Internet of Things (IoT) Systems, Secure Management of IoT Infrastructures using Software Defined Networks (SDN-IoT Security), Machine Learning Techniques for Malware Detection, as well as recently begun a new 3-year project (until July 2022) on Secure Data Centric Architecture and its Applications.

NSW Cyber Security Network

ACSRC is a founding member of the NSW Cyber Security Network (NSWCSN).

The NSWCSN facilitates collaboration between universities specialising in cyber-related research, promotes their capabilities, and supports their connection with industry. NSWCSN is also responsible for developing a workforce of cyber professionals to protect business and government against cyber attacks.

ACSRC is currently collaborating with other member universities on three significant research projects. These projects include Security in 5G/IoT Network Infrastructures (UON/UTS), Security in Smart Grids (UON/MQ) and Cryptographic Techniques for Cloud Services (UON/UoW).

NSW Cyber Security Innovation Node

ACSRC is a member of the NSW Cyber Security Innovation Node. The NSWCSN is also the coordinating body for the NSW Cyber Security Innovation Node, a partnership between the NSW Government and AustCyber (Australian Cyber Security Growth Network). The network is funded by the New South Wales Government through the Department of Industry’s Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer.

Defence Innovation Network

The University of Newcastle is a member of the NSW Defence Innovation Network (DIN), an association of seven leading universities in NSW. Cyber security is one of the capabilities promoted by the DIN and ACSRC is proud to provide this capability to DIN and its industry and government partnerships on behalf of the University of Newcastle.

The purpose of the DIN is to bring together NSW industry, universities, State Government and DST Group to address Australia’s defence needs. The DIN also supports NSW business innovation in the global defence market by harnessing world-class research capabilities available within NSW universities.

Microsoft

Microsoft has been another long-time partner of ACSRC. We have had several research collaborations with Microsoft worldwide (Cambridge, Redmond, Beijing and Australia) over many years. Current areas of interest include Cloud Security and Security and Trust in Peer to Peer Internet Services.

VMWare

VMWare has been a strategic partner in the establishment of Newcastle’s Cyber Security Laboratories. This has led to the creation of 3 Cyber Security Labs namely System Security Lab, Smart Network Infrastructure Security Lab, and an isolated Malware Lab. According to VMWare, this cyber infrastructure has been hailed as the first of its kind in an Australian tertiary institution. Currently, the ACSRC is engaging in the creation of further research collaborations in the area of Security in Virtualised Networking, Service Mesh and IoT based 5G Services.

Banlaw

Banlaw is a company in the Australian mining industry, managing the delivery of over a billion litres of diesel per month to sites in the NSW Hunter and WA regions. ACSRC has been partnering with Banlaw to enhance the security of their mobile fuel management systems. We have successfully created a secure robust communication protocol design aimed at securing Banlaw’s operations against potential cyberattacks.

Tamburlaine Wines

ACSRC cyber security research team has recently been engaged by Tamburlaine Organic Wines to develop and validate a unique cyber security solution for its key business management system and emerging cloud services. ACSRC is currently engaged in the design of a secure integrated cloud based solution to meet the specific requirements of the Tamburlaine Group.

ISIF Asia

ACSRC was proud to be awarded an ISIF Asia grant to investigate Software Defined Networks based Security Architecture for IoT Infrastructures in 2017-18. This project has supported a range of capacity building initiatives in secure IoT infrastructure design and secure healthcare applications as well as education in cyber security. The Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF Asia) aim is to empower communities in the Asia Pacific region to research, design and implement Internet-based solutions for their own needs.

ASD Cyber Express

The University of Newcastle and the ACSRC is a partner of the ASD CyberEXP which provides an interactive online cyber career exploration experience run on the LifeJourney platform. CyberEXP is sponsored by the Australian Signals Directorate. It enables students to test drive a day in the life of five ASD cyber professionals, participating in challenging real-life cyber scenarios, discovering the skills and tools used by their ASD cyber mentors, and exploring the vast number of careers available in cyber security today.

Appel de Paris

In November 2018, UNESCO President Emmanuel Macron launched the Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace. This high-level declaration supporting the development of common principles for securing cyberspace has already received the backing of 547 official supporters: 65 States, 138 international and civil society organizations, and 344 entities of the private sector. ACSRC fully supports and is a member of the Paris Call.
