Terminology
Some of the terminology in RIMS may be different to what you are familiar with, particularly if you have interacted previously with Research Services.
Below is a table listing common terms used within RIMS, as well as their meanings.

Department | Organisational unit, e.g. School. |
Institution Number |
The number which identifies the Proposal or Protocol record in the system: Proposals (grants) are identified by numbers with a 'G' prefix, Human Ethics Protocols a 'H' prefix and Animal Ethics Protocols an 'A' prefix. |
Modules | Different components of RIMS, i.e. Proposals, Human Ethics, Animal Use. |
PI or Principal Investigator | CI or Chief Investigator / Project Supervisor. |
Projects | Any grouping of Proposals and Protocols that relates to the same research activity. |
Proposals | Research grants, fellowships or funding applications. |
Protocols | Research projects submitted for animal or human ethics approval. |
Sponsor | Funding body. |
Submission | Applications or submissions within Proposals or Protocols. |
