VC Awards for Early Career Research and Innovation Excellence

These awards recognise the significant contribution and excellence in research made by early career researchers of the University of Newcastle.

The awards fall into the following categories:

  • An award for an outstanding early career researcher from each Faculty;
  • An award for an outstanding early career researcher from the Divisions; and
  • The overall Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Early Career Researcher of the Year. This award is presented to the most outstanding winner of a Faculty or Division research excellence award.

The awards will be based on the excellence of the nominee's cumulative research activities, subsequent to the awarding of their PhD or equivalent research attainment.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominated researchers must meet the following eligibility.

  • Nominees must be within five years of completion of their PhD and be a member of academic staff, or a professional staff member who is actively engaged in research.
  • If on a contract, staff must have a minimum of one year remaining at the nomination closing date.
  • Conjoint appointees of more than three years standing may also be considered providing their research is primarily based at the University.
  • Previous recipients of this award are not eligible to be nominated again.

CRITERIA

The awards will be based on the excellence of the nominee’s cumulative research activity, subsequent to the awarding of their PhD. The purpose of basing the selection criteria on the cumulative research activity is to reward early career researchers who are on a rising trajectory and making an impact within their research field.

Research activities include (but are not limited to):

  • publications
  • grants/significant funding
  • collaboration
  • industry engagement
  • commercial activities
  • creative arts exhibitions/performances
  • mentorship/supervision/leadership
  • community engagement and input
  • policy input
  • teaching load (if applicable)

PRIZES

Winners of a Faculty or Division research and innovation excellence award will receive $2,000, paid as salary (in the year of award) or a travel grant (for the following year) and a certificate.

The winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s award for Early Career Researcher of the Year will receive $10,000, paid as a research grant held at the University of Newcastle for the following year, and a certificate.

The awards will be presented at the annual staff awards each year.
