About the awards

The Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Research and Innovation Excellence recognises the significant contribution to research excellence made by the University of Newcastle's talented early career researchers.

The awards will be based on the excellence of the nominee's cumulative research activities, subsequent to the awarding of their PhD or equivalent research attainment.

The awards fall into the following categories:

  • an award for an outstanding researcher from each Faculty;
  • an award for an outstanding researcher from the Divisions; and
  • the overall Vice-Chancellor's Award for Early Career Researcher of the Year. This award is presented to the most outstanding winner of a Faculty or Division research excellence award.

Prizes

Winners of a Faculty or Division award will receive $2,000 (paid as a salary or a travel grant) and a certificate.

The recipient of the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Early Career Researcher of the Year will receive $10,000 (paid as a research grant held at the University of Newcastle) and a certificate.

The awards will be presented at the annual staff awards each year.
