About the awards

These awards recognise the significant contribution and excellence in research made by early career researchers of the University of Newcastle.

The awards will be based on the excellence of the nominee's cumulative research activities, subsequent to the awarding of their PhD or equivalent research attainment.

The awards fall into the following categories:

  • an award for an outstanding early career researcher from each Faculty;
  • an award for an outstanding early career researcher from the Divisions; and
  • the overall Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Early Career Researcher of the Year. This award is presented to the most outstanding winner of a Faculty or Division research excellence award.

Prizes

Winners of a Faculty or Division research and innovation excellence award will receive $2,000, paid as salary (in the year of award) or a travel grant (for the following year) and a certificate.

The winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s award for Early Career Researcher of the Year will receive $10,000, paid as a research grant held at the University of Newcastle for the following year, and a certificate.

The awards will be presented at the annual staff awards each year.
