DSA-18 Hub

DSA-18 Hub is a purpose-designed facility which offers a co-location working space for researchers, postgraduate students and industry partners to work collaboratively on projects of mutual benefit for the Defence, Security and Aerospace (DSA) sectors.

Located at the Williamtown Aerospace Centre, DSA-18 Hub represents a significant investment by the University in the development of the Hunter region's future workforce and has been positioned to align with Local, State and Federal employment strategies and initiatives.

The suite of programs delivered through DSA-18 Hub are focused on the significant opportunities for building a strong Defence Industry in the Hunter region. The New South Wales: Strong, Smart and Connected, the NSW Government Defence and Industry Strategy 2017 highlights these opportunities, based on a number of key large Defence contracts with Primes, such as BAE Systems Australia’s Southern Pacific leadership role for the F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter sustainment, the large population of skilled Defence and Defence Industry workforce based in the region, and the array of small to medium enterprise with experience in land, air and sea projects.

A NeW Futures strategic initiative

The University is committed to growing the regional economy of Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast as part of our NeW Futures 2016–2025 strategic plan. NeW Futures recognises that the nature of businesses, jobs and the workforce are undergoing transformation and DSA-18 Hub is one of a number of initiatives which ensures the University is well-positioned to respond to this change. As a key piece of enabling infrastructure, DSA-18 provides a dedicated hub to ensure discovery and innovation in the defence sector with a view to increasing the commercialisation and impact of UON research.

In addition to strategic UON support, DSA-18 Defence Hub also receives funding via the NSW State Government's Boosting Business Innovation grant scheme, which is aimed at providing SME's with access to research organisations to build strong local business communities and stimulate economic growth.
