PhD Scholarship: Enhancing Cybersecurity using Machine Learning Technologies

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship for research in enhancing cybersecurity using machine learning technologies.

The scholarship is provided by the University of Newcastle under the Defence Industry Higher Degree Research Scholarships scheme.

Cybersecurity is related to the protection of systems, networks and data in cyberspace. It encounters ever-increased challenges including big data to deal with, too few qualified personnel to defend the system on time, too many false positive and fake alarms, and inefficiency in dealing with quickly and constantly evolving nature of security risks. Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

It focuses on the development of programs that can teach themselves to grow and change when exposed to new data. Machine learning has been applied in various areas such as search engine and voice recognition. It has the high potency to enhance cybersecurity because it can efficiently deal with big data, detect real threats quickly, and learn what is appropriate activity and react.

The object of the research is to develop machine learning-based methodologies that deliver an enhanced cybersecurity that can automatically detect, protect and mitigate cybersecurity violation.

A typical example of the deliverables is: it can quickly learn what is appropriate activity and react by analysing normal network behavior from accumulated big data. For example it can identify unusual traffic on the network and shut down these connections as it occurs; identify new samples of malware and quarantine them before they can be executed.

Scholarship details

Defence Industry Higher Degree Research Scholarships scheme: These scholarships are designed to provide supported encouragement for the development and advancement of knowledge and expertise which will aid in the defence industry of Australia and will comprise of financial support of tuition fees, a living allowance stipend ($26,288), relocation costs (up to $2,000) and overseas student health insurance as required.

Eligibility criteria

  • IELTS minimum of 6.5 overall with no band less than 6
  • An Honours Class One or equivalent qualification
  • Good in programming such as Matlab, Python, Java, C++
  • Research experience in machine learning, deep learning, cybersecurity
