Environmental Factors Controlling Absorption and Impact of Metallic Anions in Plants

This project will develop new information and modelling approaches for the absorption and impacts of metallic anions in plants, which will provide new insights on ecotoxicological modelling for inorganic anionic toxicants.
Metallic anions (e.g. arsenic and selenium) are an important group of elements in terrestrial environments due to their role in human and ecological health, both positive and negative. Some elements such as selenium are critical to human health and sub-optimal intake rates are associated with a range of serious health conditions. Human health impacts of metallic anions have received intense world-wide research, especially in the case of arsenic due to its well documented impact on the Bangladesh population. In comparison, the processes and environmental factors influencing ecological toxicity of this group of elements have received far less attention. This project will develop a coherent model platform predicting the absorption and toxicity of metallic anions in agricultural and contaminated environments. We are looking for someone with an interest in the development of sophisticated ecotoxicological modelling approaches for metallic anions in terrestrial environments. The project will investigate and quantify the key factors controlling plant uptake and toxicity focussing on the aqueous and gas phase composition. A critical component of the project will involve detailed investigation of metal (loid) speciation within plant tissues using hyphenated chromatography techniques such as liquid chromatography inductively coupled mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry and synchrotron based techniques. The successful applicant will work alongside a team of researchers to achieve the project aims.

Funding: Scholarship #1: Australian Research Council funded scholarship. $27,596 per annum (2019 rate) indexed annually. For a PhD candidate, the living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years. Scholarship #2: University of Newcastle funded scholarship. $27,596 per annum (2019 rate) indexed annually. For a PhD candidate, the living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years.
