CANCER: Radiation Oncology, Cancer Imaging and Technology

You will focus on the disciplines of radiation oncology, medical physics, cancer imaging and technology. You will work amongst clinical professionals to improve the delivery of cancer treatment, address the psychosocial issues associated with cancer care, develop novel treatment modalities or reduce the evidence-practice gap within the health care setting. You will have the opportunity to be involved in clinical trials and studies to translate your research findings.
The Hunter Cancer Research Alliance (HCRA) brings together leading cancer researchers and clinicians from the University of Newcastle, the Hunter Medical Research Institute, the Hunter New England Local Health District and the Calvary Mater Hospital Newcastle. HCRA provides capacity building, funding and strategic support to over 400 members. Cancer research in the Hunter spans the full translational spectrum from basic laboratory science to clinical trials and behavioural, implementation and health services research.
HCRA supports three flagship programs:
1. Biomarkers and Targeted & Therapy (BTT)
2. Radiation Oncology, Cancer Imaging & Technology (ROCIT)
3. Implementation Science & Impact (ISI) HCRA is offering one (1) PhD Scholarship under the Radiation Oncology, Cancer Imaging & Technology (ROCIT) Flagship Program.
Three (3) potential projects have been identified for the successful candidate to select from.
These projects are:
1. MRI based assessment of tumour innervation in Head and Neck squamous cell carcinoma patients

2. Four dimensional Magnetic resonance Imaging in Radiotherapy for AChieving tumour Localisation and Effective treatment (MIRACLE)
Supervisor: Dr Danny Lee
3.Development of acquisition and processing algorithm for two-dimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (2D MRS) for in vivo brain applications
An application to Brain Cancer 2D MRS is a technique where data is collected from in vivo tissue in a non-invasive manner, to yield a biochemical profile of tissue. It is the only known technique that can give such information in a non-invasive manner. Its utility has been shown in many pathologies including liver disease, glioblastoma, breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, prostate and many other pathologies. The progress of in vivo 2D MRS has been slow but steady and forwardly. Twenty two years after the first 2D in vivo COSY was collected, the clinical application of the technique in many body organs is still in its infancy. There is no doubt about the utility and usefulness of the technique, however, more development is required to reduce experimental acquisition time, expand coverage to full brain and automate processing and analysis.

PhD Scholarship details
Funding: $27,596 per annum (2019 rate) indexed annually. For a PhD candidate, the living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years.

The applicant will need to meet the minimum eligibility criteria for admission.
1. If you are interested in working on a PhD project in one of these areas, please send an email introducing yourself to HCRA-ROCIT@newcastle.edu.au
2. HCRA will send you research profiles of the potential supervisors. You will be invited to read over these profiles and make contact with the supervisors whose area of research interests you.
3. The supervisor(s) that you have contacted will meet you and assess your suitability to work as part of their team. They may then offer to work with you to prepare a HCRA PhD Application. (NB. Each supervisor has complete discretion when deciding on potential PhD students).
4. The Student (with supervisor approval) submits an application to HCRA-ROCIT@newcastle.edu.au using the application form provided to the Supervisor.
5. Student/ Supervisor project applications will be assessed by the HCRA Joint Evaluation Committee and the strongest applicant and project combination will be awarded the scholarship.
