World Suicide Prevention Day (10th Sept) and R U Ok? Day (14th September 2017)

Suicide Prevention in the spotlight in September

The CRHS is proud to support World Suicide Prevention Day (10th Sept) and R U Ok? Day (14th Sept). The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. In Australia, more than 2,500 people die each year by suicide, with the latest figures telling us that 3,027 Australians took their own life in 2015. The theme of this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September is ‘Take a minute, change a life’, which highlights the importance of speaking up, taking the time, and listening. This year’s message fits in very well with R U Ok? Day on 14th September. R U Ok?’s vision is a world where everyone is connected and protected from suicide. Their mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. The R U Ok? Day website provides some excellent resources on how to start a conversation with someone you are worried about.
