GICs and the electricity supply
Space weather related geomagnetic induced currents (GICs) have proven to be a threat to electricity networks at high latitudes. In order to convey power over greater distances the trend has been to build long transmission lines which are exposed to larger induced voltages driving larger GICs.
The Space Physics group at Newcastle work with the IPS Radio and Space Services division of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology to understand the threat to the Australian electricity network from space weather. A preliminary study was published by Marshall et al., 2010.
