World class research facilities and expertise

CNRC collaborators have well established independent research facilities in Newcastle, Adelaide and Melbourne. Complementary equipment and techniques enable the conduct of multicentre diet and lifestyle intervention trials in human volunteers with the following minimally invasive assessments:

  • Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health: flow-mediated dilatation, transcranial Doppler ultrasound, 24hr ambulatory blood pressure, heart rate variability, arterial compliance
  • Body composition and metabolism: bioelectrical impedance, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), indirect calorimetry
  • Cognitive function, mood and stress: computerised cognitive test batteries developed to assess nutraceuticals; standardized self-report measures of mood; stress biomarkers (e.g. cortisol)
  • Muscle strength and physical function: cycle ergometry, isokinetic dynamometry, treadmill testing, accelerometry
  • Biological assays/techniques: dietary assessments, blood sampling and tissue biopsy, biomarkers including lipids, glucose/insulin, fatty acids, inflammatory mediators and markers of gene expression by autoanalyser, whole blood aggregometer, GC, TLC, HPLC, ELISA, microarray and RT-qPCR

Intervention trials are registered with ANZCTR and conducted in accordance with ICH-GCP guidelines.
