The Centre for the Study of Violence welcomes applications from academics holding a position at another institution who wish to participate in the Academic Visitor programme. This programme is intended for visiting postgrads and scholars with a clearly defined research agenda, who wish to spend a minimum of two weeks in Newcastle to make use of the University’s facilities.

Professor Naomi Goldenberg (2019)

Professor Goldenberg is a world-renowned scholar in the field of religion, gender, violence and the state. While at UoN, Professor Goldenberg gave a HDR Masterclass on religion, gender and the state as well as a key note address at the Australian Association for the Study of Religion conference. She also continued her longstanding collaboration with her colleague Dr Kathleen McPhillips, as they complete a book on emerging feminist theories looking at the intersections between the state and religious violence.

Professor Nigel Penn (2019)

A Professor of History at the University of Cape Town, Professor Penn visited the University of Newcastle to work on a book together with Professors Philip Dwyer and Lyndall Ryan of the Centre for the Study of Violence. The book is a comparative history of violence on the frontiers of colonialism during the revolutionary period, c. 1780 to 1820. Professor Penn is a specialist on the history of the early colonial Cape and the frontier between the colonists and the Khoisan people of southern Africa.
Professor Eric Weitz (2018)

A Distinguished Professor of History from the City College of New York, Dr Weitz is an expert on international human rights and crimes against humanity.

Dr Adrian Hanni (2018)

A political historian, Dr. Adrian Hänni is from the University of Zurich and Distance Learning University Switzerland. With a background in studying intelligence history, the Cold War and terrorism history, Dr. Hänni brought to UON his expertise on non-state political violence and the history of terrorism and counterterrorism.

Professor Mark S. Micale (2017)

Mark S. Micale is a Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an internationally recognised historian of psychiatry, medicine and European culture. While visiting the University of Newcastle he presented a public lecture on the Global Turn in Trauma Studies.

Professor Michael Roper (2017)

From the University of Essex and with a background in the study of masculinity, psychoanalysis, biography and personal testimony, Professor Roper brought to UON expertise on the long-term emotional effects of the First World War.

Professor John Horne (2015)

A Professor of Modern European History, Professor Horne is also the Director of the Centre for War Studies at Trinity College Dublin and member of the Executive Board of the Historial de la Grande Guerre, Péronne. While at UON he presented a public lecture on The Changing Face of War in the 20th Century

Professor Peter Spierenburg (2014)

A world leading expert in the history of crime, punishment and murder, Professor Speirenburg is from the Dutch Institute for Genocide and Holocaust Studies (NIOD) and Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands. While at UON he presented a public lecture on The History of Murder, and History of Violence seminar.
