Medical Engineering Research

Just as the fourth industrial revolution is changing how we live and work, it is also changing the way we treat diseases, the way we tackle health care challenges and even the way we think about the possibilities of the human body. Researchers who work in the convergent field of medical engineering are driving this transformation and shaping the future of health.

The University of Newcastle has a strong program of medical engineering research spanning applications including medical signal processing, image analysis, virtual reality in medical settings, artificial organs, precision mechatronics, personalised medicine and intelligent implants.

Our researchers are applying engineering expertise that draws from the disciplines of biomechanical engineering, electrical engineering and control systems, mechatronics and automation, computer science and data analytics.

Their medical engineering research touches on health issues ranging from stroke rehabilitation to orthopaedic implant removal, prostatectomy surgery, diabetes management, bone distraction and risk-taking behaviour in teenagers.

Medical engineering; harnessing the transformative power of technology to save lives and make them better.
