Description

Mechanical engineers work to improve the design, safety and energy efficiency of the machines that support industry and society - machines such as vehicles, aircraft, mechanical prostheses, wheelchairs, lifts and industrial plant. It is perhaps the broadest of all engineering disciplines and allows students to choose from the widest possible range of specialisations.


Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

Compulsory program requirements

Requirements for qualification of this award, include completion of at least 12 weeks of industrial experience of a nature acceptable to the College Board. Students are encouraged to obtain and to report on a substantial block of this experience at one time but several shorter periods not less than 2 weeks duration will be accepted. This program is accredited by Engineers Australia, and by virtue of the Washington Accord, is recognized internationally, facilitating opportunity for an international career.Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) are eligible to apply for registration to Engineers Australia.

Program duration

4 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 10 years maximum.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) program is a 4 year program comprising 320 units, of which 260 units are core courses, 10 units are Physics core courses, 30 units are from the course list* and 20 units are elective courses. No more than 120 units can be at 1000 level; and at least 40 units must be taken at each level from the 2000 level and above for this program. 

*Please note that core course MECH3440 Mechanics of Solids has been replaced by 10 units from the course list. If you have already completed MECH3440, then you need not complete an additional 10 units from the course list.

Students enrolled at UON SINGAPORE campus: Please note that as this program is in teach-out, course availability and some course codes may differ from the courses listed in the program structure. It is important that you enrol in the correct course codes on offer at your campus of enrolment. Therefore please refer to the Program Plan for Singapore (for the year you commenced your program) and the Singapore Teach-out Arrangement document  below prior to enrolment to ensure you select the appropriate courses.

Please note: Students enrolled at Callaghan are required to complete AERO3600 which replaces ENGG3440 (previously ELEC4400). Students enrolled at UON Singapore will NOT take AERO3600 and will be required to take ELEC3410 (previously ENGG3440) to satisfy the requirements of their program. Complete 20 units of electives to fulfil the requirements of the program. Electives can be used to extend and complement your core studies with more courses in the same field of study, or from areas that might be of interest to you. Electives can be chosen from all courses available at the University that do not have any other conditions (such as a course requisite) applied to them.

Additional information

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
