Description
The Bachelor of Information Technology/Bachelor of Business combined degree program provides students with an opportunity to undertake concurrent study, and to complete two awards over a period of four years.In general, a combined degree program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Knowledge: you will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of information technology with an emphasis on interconnected applications, information management, and user requirements for ethical professional practice.
- Reason: you will apply critical reasoning and systems thinking to understand and support the operation and constraints of contemporary enterprises and their dynamic environment.
- Proficiency: you will work both independently and collaboratively to locate, manage and organise information and resources and will apply evidence-based approaches to create, modify and maintain designs and design solutions.
- Creativity: you will apply critical thinking and analytical problem solving skills, project management skills, and technical expertise to analyse, interpret, evaluate and generate solutions to complex technical and organisational problems.
- Professionalism: you will demonstrate professional judgement and responsibility by clearly and persuasively communicating principles, practices, and standards of information technology to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Professionalism: you will have business skills that incorporate understanding of ethical, economic, regulatory and global perspectives.

Admission requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC), prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Credit transfer
If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution, or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to the new program, visit the University's credit website for more information on applying for credit.
Credit may be granted for studies completed at another institution if they were completed within the previous 10 years. Credit will be granted by the Pro Vice-Chancellors of the Faculty of Science and Information Technology and the Faculty of Business and Law in accordance with the relevant policies approved by the University.

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor Information Technology are eligible to apply for membership to the Australian Computer Society.

Program duration
4 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 10 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. International students requiring enrolment advice should review the program plan corresponding to the semester and year of commencement and can contact their Program Advisor at ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au
Program requirements
The combined degree program enables students to complete two, three-year degree programs in four years of full time study or the part-time equivalent. Students who undertake this combined degree program are required to complete a total of, but no more than, 320 units, comprised of the following:
- 210 units core courses;
- 50 units ICT Professional Major (30 units of Core courses count towards the major for a total of 80 units);
- 60 units of B Business Major of choice (20 units of Core courses count towards the major for a total of 80 units).
Students are advised to minimise the impacts of possible timetable clashes that they should follow the program plan given (located on this Handbook).

- The BIT ICT Developer major is not available in this combined degree
- This program does not have any elective courses. Students must only complete courses that form part of their program.
- B Business core course STAT1060 also counts towards the ICT Professional major compulsory course requirements.
- Business Major of choice: To keep the degree flexible and allow students the choice of the full range of B Business majors INFT2150 replaces a 2000-level course from the Course List in Business Majors: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Politics and International Relations and Tourism and Event Management. INFT2150 replaces a 3000-level course from the Course List in Business Majors: Leadership and Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management and International Business.

Transition arrangements
For students who commenced prior to 2022:
The Business Technology major has been discontinued from the BIT program, as well as changes to the Core of the degree. Please refer to the 2021 Teach-out Arrangement document, listed in the Additional documents section above.
For students who commenced in 2017 - 2019:
Core course INFT1150 Foundations of Information Systems has been removed from the program. For detailed Transtion Arrangement information, please refer to the Transition Arrangement document, listed in the Additional documents section above.
For students who commenced prior to 2017:
From Semester 1, 2018 the Bachelor of Business directed list has been removed from the program. Courses from this list have been added to the appropriate major with the exception of ECON1002, which is now removed from the program. If you have previously completed ECON1002 it will still count towards your program.
The Bachelor of Information Technology program was revised in 2016, and changes to the program were implemented effective Semester 1, 2017. As a result the Enterprise Information Technology major is now named “Business Technology”. Information about transition and course equivalencies for students who commenced prior to 2017 is available in the Transition Arrangement document, listed in the Additional documents section above.
Please note: For 2017 and Semester 1, 2018 the following courses can be counted in lieu of EBUS3030:
- INFT3007 or
- MNGT3002 or
- MNGT3008
Transition Arrangements for students who commenced prior to 2016:
The B Business program was revised in 2015, and changes to the program were implemented effective Semester 1, 2016. Students who transitioned to the revised structure should note the following:
- ECON1002, MNGT2001 and POLI3001 have been removed from the core. If you have previously completed ECON1002, MNGT2001 or POLI3001 it will still count towards your program.
- IRHR1001 has been replaced with MNGT1001.
- ACFI2005 has been replaced with ACFI1003.
- EBUS2000 is no longer core in the program, but remains as a compulsory course for the Enterprise Information Technology major. Students who have not yet taken EBUS2000 should complete EBUS3030. Please refer to the 2017 arrangements for more information regarding this course.
- The Management major is now named “Leadership and Management”.
For students who commenced prior to 2014:
INFT3970 (20 units) replaced INFT3930. Students who have successfully completed INFT3930 are not permitted to enrol in INFT3970.
No continuing student will be disadvantaged by the transition arrangements. Information about transition and course equivalencies for students who commenced prior to 2017 is available in the Transition Arrangement document, listed in the addtional documents section above.

An Honours year in available in both the Information Technology and the Business disciplines. These are available to students as a separate program in the form of an additional year to those who meet the entry requirements.

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
