Career Summary
Biography
Prof McBride completed a Mechanical Engineering degree (1987-1991) and PhD (1992-2001 Part Time) at Newcastle University. Prof McBride was employed as a consulting engineer in the bulk materials handling field working on international projects with specific expertise in Stockpiles, Transfer chutes, Feeders and Mechanical Handling devices. Prof McBride was a conjoint Professor at Witwatersrand University in South Africa where Post Graduate teaching of bulk solids handling is performed.
Research Expertise
Prof McBride has a research background in experimental bulk solids handling. Stockpile mechanics became the focus of a PhD in this area. Significant work has been undertaken in many areas of bulk materials handling systems, such as feeders, transfer chutes and dust control. With the growth of computer simulation tools such as DEM, A/Prof McBride has worked collaboratively with CSIRO on the accurate modelling of complex systems such as transfer chutes and screw based feeders/conveyors. On average Prof McBride supervises some 10 engineering honours student per year and supervisors 2 FTE PhD students.
Teaching Expertise
Prof McBride provides the major component of Computer Aided Engineering education in the Mechanical Engineering degree at Newcastle University. A 1st year foundation combines CAE with production methods and technical sketching skills which are a foundation for the design stream within Mechanical Engineering. An elective course in the students 4th year provides a mush higher level of skills in CAE with CNC manufacturing and Computational Fluid Mechanics a substantive element of this course.. In addition to the teaching at Newcastle postgraduate Bulk Materials Handling courses are offered through WitsWatersrand University with A/Prof McBride providing these as a fly in/fly out service.
Administrative Expertise
Since appointment in 2002, A/Prof McBride has been increasingly providing greater administrative leadership within the discipline and Faculty. In part this stems from a deep belief that without high quality governance, high quality education is greatly complicated. During the period as Assistant Dean, significant improvements in the graduating students evaluations of our programs have occurred. Administrative roles conducted- Program Convenor for Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering 2005 - 2009 Deputy AD T&L 2008-2010 Head of Discipline 2009-2011 Assistant Dean Teaching and Learning 2010 -
In 2015 an ambition project to redesign all of the Undergraduate Engineering offerings, and create end on Maters of Professional Engineering was conceived. Throughout the latter part of 2015 and through 2016 these plans were developed with first intakes into all the programs commencing in 2017.
Collaborations
Collaboration with Queens University in Canada has been undertaken looking at stress distribution under bulk material stockpiles. Collaboration with CSIRO on the numerical modelling of granular flow system and mechanical handling devices has been undertaken and continues.

The experimental work presented spans a range of particle parameters and hopper geometries. From these results a new theory for the prediction of air entrainment is developed and presented. This new method was developed specifically to facilitate a better understanding in the area of fugitive dust control associated with material handling systems, which are driven by the air entrainment during freefalling. From the work presented in this article, a better prediction capability of freefalling bulk materials in either constrained, or unconstrained systems, will allow for the optimization of either passive or active dust control strategies. This article presents several distinct sections that detail the experimental work used to determine the freefall stream parameters that were conducted to allow the development of the entrainment equations. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Measurements were made using a conventional compressibility tester and a `shear box'. Consolidation or maximum packing for a sample was achieved by `twisting' the sample when using the conventional bulk density test machine and with the shear box by shearing at a number of horizontal planes, here 7 layers through a sample were sheared. Bulk density measurements were also made with the conventional tester where instead of applying twisting, the sample was either tapped or no external stimuli applied. The two tests, using the conventional tester without twisting, provided low bulk density measurements. These measured bulk densities were expected to be in error as the bulk solid has not reached maximum packing for a set consolidation load. There was general agreement between the conventional machine with twisting and that with the shear box with 10 or 20 shear oscillations. Both bulk solid measurement methods were repeatable using different batches of the same bulk solid for the range of normal stress (2 kPa to 52 kPa) and moisture content. |
