Career Summary
Biography
Sarah Olson is a Registered Nurse and newly appointed Associate Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Newcastle. Her areas of passion include paediatric nursing, emergency care and Aboriginal health. Sarah started her career at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Brisbane and still reflects on how important these early years were in shaping the nurse she is today. Sarah has always had a keen interest in academia and early into her nursing career undertook a Master of Business, majoring in the field of public sector management. Since then Sarah has nursed around Australia in variety of locations including Brisbane, Sydney, Kalgoorlie and Broome, and undertaken many different roles to extend her skills. Whilst undertaking regional work Sarah developed an interest in paediatric Aboriginal health.
While she was nursing in the Emergency Department at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Sarah’s interest in education grew and she enrolled into her Graduate Diploma of Nursing, specialising in paediatrics. From here Sarah moved into a role with the education team at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, supporting nursing staff who were not new to the profession, but new to paediatrics. This role enabled Sarah to be exposed to the simulated learning space; Sarah became heavily involved in simulated education, with a focus on upskilling staff working in paediatric emergency and critical care environments.
While at UoN, Sarah aims to enhance her teaching skills, gain a more in depth understanding of research practices and utilise the teaching space to encourage students to find their passion within nursing. Sarah will commence her PhD in 2020 in the area of paediatrics with a focus on Aboriginal health and emergency care.
