Conjoint Associate Professor Phillip Geary

Conjoint Associate Professor

School of Environmental and Life Sciences (Environmental Science and Management)

Career Summary

Biography

Phillip is a Conjoint Associate Professor of Environmental Science in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences. He holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees and Diploma in Education from The University of Newcastle. His PhD was gained at The University of Western Sydney with a thesis titled "On-site System Effluent Source Tracking Using Geochemical and Microbial Tracers in a Coastal Catchment". Phillip has taught Earth and Environmental Science at The University of Newcastle since 1990 and has held various positions such as Head of Discipline of Earth Sciences (2006-2009) and Assistant Dean (International) for the Faculty of Science (2011-2014).

Phillip retired from the teaching program at the university in 2017, however he continues to be involved in a number of research projects and also undertakes consulting assignments. He is also involved in teaching a short course dealing with small wastewater management systems and the land application of effluent. This training course (On-Site Domestic Wastewater Management) has been run many times throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Phillip’s research interests include the design and performance of small-scale on-site wastewater systems, including constructed wetlands, mounds and sand filters, the land application of domestic and agricultural wastewaters and tracing the movement and fate of contaminants in soils and groundwaters. His current research involves using a variety of microbiological and chemical source tracking techniques in catchments, as well as estuaries which are used for aquaculture. The chemical techniques include the use of optical brighteners (fluorescent whitening agents), fluorescein, lithium and bromide as added tracers, as well as analysis of faecal sterols in environmental waters to distinguish between human and animal sources of contamination.

Phillip's research collaborations are with a number of local councils, Hunter Water Corporation, NSW Food Authority and other funding bodies. Collaboration is also undertaken with colleagues at other institutions within Australia and overseas.
